Nursery curriculum – the Early Years Foundation Stage

All children between the age of three and five are part of the Foundation Stage. The Foundation Stage curriculum is split into 3 prime areas and 4 specific areas.

3 prime areas are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

4 specific areas are:

  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Literacy
  • Expressive Arts and Design

This is an extremely important time in a child’s life. They are constantly encountering new experiences and learning from them. This happens both at home and at school, therefore we aim to work closely with parents. Parents are encouraged to come into the nursery to help. Please let us know if you have any particular skills or are in a profession that may be of interest to the children. You are a very valuable learning resource!

Activities in the Foundation Stage are very practical. Well planned play, with appropriate adult intervention, is a key way in which we help our children to learn. Learning takes place in both the inside and outside environments.

Foundation Stage Profile

Children in nursery are assessed through observation and group activities. These observations are used to build a profile which follows each child through the Foundation Stage. These profiles are completed in partnership with parents and are recorded on Tapestry, an online learning journal.

Throughout the year we provide the nursery parents with the opportunity to ‘Stay and Play’ with their children for a session. This gives parents a chance to see what their child does at nursery and to have a brief chat about their progress. This will give the parents the opportunity to find out how their child uses the different equipment to help them learn and progress.
